  2.                  THE MEANING OF .ARC, .LBR, .LQR, .EQE, .?Q?
  3.  
  4.                      HELP FOR NEWUSERS ON BULLETIN BOARDS
  5.  
  6.   Disk storage space is always a problem.  Therefore, several methods have
  7.   been developed to save BBS Systems space to hold more files.  An advan-
  8.   tage to the user is that the files are smaller, taking less time to down-
  9.   load.   What we do (Sysops [system operator] that is) is to "ARCHIVE" or
  10.   "SQUEEZE" or "LIBRARY and SQUEEZE" FILES.  This is done with several
  11.   utilities.  Before you can use any of the files that have been libraried
  12.   or squeezed or archived, you must "UN" lib, "UN" sq, or "UN" archive the
  13.   file.

  15.   The names may change slightly but to use files from this RBBS, you MUST
  16.   have a copy of:

  18.        1) ARC430.EXE                 2) ARC430.DQC (docs for arc430.exe)
  19.        3) LUE.COM                    4) NUSQ14.COM
  20.  
  21.    A) ARC430.EXE is the archive utility that we are switching to for almost
  22.       everything!!  ALWAYS ARCHIVE YOUR UPLOADS TO THIS RBBS!!!
  23.       You will know that you have to use this utility whenever a file has
  24.       an extension of  .ARC  (example:  TURBO-UT.ARC,  PCW25.ARC, etc.).

  26.       To operate this utility:

  28.            1) To open an ARCHIVED file:
  29.  
  30.                    - type at the A> ARC430 E FILENAME.ARC
  31.                        -make sure that you have enough disk space
  32.                         for the opened file
  33.  
  34.            2) To create an ARCHIVED file:
  35.  
  36.                    - type at the A> ARC430 U ARCHIVENAME FILENAME.EXT
  37.  
  38.                    - You can also use wildcards:
  39.                            ARC430 U ARCHIVENAME *.*
  40.  
  41.                              - do a whole subdirectory or disk.
  42.  
  43.            3) To "TEST" a file to be sure that you got a good download, you
  44.               type at the  A> ARC430 T FILENAME.ARC.
  45.                 -it is good practice to always test your downloads.
  46.  
  47.            4) You can "print" to screen/printer docs that are within an
  48.               archive and you can "run" a file without extracting.  See
  49.               ARC430.DQC for details.

  51.    B) LUE.COM is a utility that will open a library file.  A library file
  52.    is one that has the extension:  .LBR .   To operate:
  53.  
  54.        1) Type at the A> LUE FILENAME.LBR
  55.            -make sure that you have enough space on disk for the opened
  56.             file.  There may be from 2 to 255 files inside an .LBR!
  57.             You may also find that all the files inside a .LBR are
  58.             squeezed; some or all may have a "Q" as the middle letter of
  59.             the extension.  Where you have a "Q" as the middle letter of
  60.             the extension, you use NUSQ14.COM to "UN"squeeze the file.
  61.             Some still use odd-ball squeezers and when you run NUSQ14
  62.             against the squeezed file, you get the message:  NOT A SQUEEZED
  63.             FILE.   When this occurs, you need, in most cases, USQ2.EXE.
  64.             This is a real slow cumbersome unsqueezers but you should have
  65.             it in your arsenal for those few files.

  67.    C) NUSQ14.COM is a file to "UN"squeeze files.  You will know that a file
  68.       is squeezed when it has a "Q" as the middle letter of the extension:
  69.       for example:  TURBOTOOL.DQC,  RAMPAGE.EQE,  HELP.HQP, FREEDOM.LQR.
  70.       If you see: .LQR in the extension, it is a library that has been
  71.       created and then squeezed.  You will have to unsqueeze then unlibrary
  72.       with LUE.COM.

  74.         1) To operate:

  76.              - type at the A> NUSQ14 FILENAME.EQT
  77.  
  78.              - Nusq14 will accept wildcards:  NUSQ14 *.*
  79.                  -this will unsqueeze all the files.  It will not do
  80.                   anything to a file that is not squeezed.
